What to Expect on the Day
Depart Marina Vallarta or El Muelle
Most tours depart from Marina Vallarta — a modern marina 5 km north of El Centro. Some tours depart from the El Muelle waterfront near downtown. Your booking confirmation specifies the exact meeting point. Taxis from the hotel zone to the Marina take 10–15 minutes. The Marina has cafés and shops for pre-departure waiting.
Into Banderas Bay
Banderas Bay stretches 40 km across and 40 km deep — one of the largest bays in North America. Humpback whales use the sheltered inner bay for nursing and the deeper outer channels for singing. The Sierra Madre Occidental mountains rise directly behind Puerto Vallarta — on clear days, snow-capped peaks are visible above the tropical coastline.
Humpback whale encounters
Humpbacks in Banderas Bay are in breeding mode — males are singing, females are nursing calves, and competition between males is active. This produces some of the most dynamic surface behaviour of any humpback population: breaching, pec slapping, tail lobbing, and spy-hopping are regular January–March. Calves are often seen attempting their first breaches alongside their mothers.
Dolphins and marine life
Banderas Bay supports year-round populations of bottlenose and spinner dolphins. Spinner dolphins are famous for their acrobatic spinning leaps — pods of 50–200 often encounter whale watching boats. Manta rays, sea turtles, and flying fish are common. The Los Arcos Marine Sanctuary (snorkeling combo tour) has tropical fish not seen in other Mexican Pacific destinations.
Sunset over the Sierra Madre
The sunset tour is timed to be on the water as the sun drops behind the Sierra Madre — turning the sky orange and pink over the mountains, with humpback blows catching the golden light.
