What to Expect on the Day
Arriving at Península Valdés
Península Valdés is 80 km from Puerto Madryn via Ruta Nacional 3 and Ruta Provincial 2 (fully paved). There is a national park entrance gate where an entrance fee is charged (typically included in organised tour prices). From here the road crosses open Patagonian steppe — the landscape is flat, dry scrubland with guanacos, rheas, and Magellan geese visible from the road before the whale watching begins.
El Doradillo beach
El Doradillo is a beach on the edge of Golfo Nuevo where the seabed shallows rapidly, causing southern right whales to swim in close to shore. During peak season (August–October), guides position visitors on the beach as whales surface and breathe nearby. The sight of a 50-tonne whale exhaling spray 30 metres from a public beach is one of the most dramatic wildlife moments in Patagonia.
Puerto Pirámides whale watching boat
Boats launch from Puerto Pirámides beach into Golfo Nuevo. Operators cut their engines when within 100 metres of a whale and allow the whale to control the encounter. Southern right whales are notably curious — they regularly approach boats, swim underneath, and surface alongside. Calves in August–September are particularly active, breaching and spy-hopping near the boats. The boat trip is 1.5 hours in total.
Wildlife circuit on the peninsula
Full-day tours continue from Puerto Pirámides to other wildlife sites on the peninsula. Caleta Valdés (eastern coast) has southern elephant seals from April to November. Sea lion rookeries are at Punta Norte (also the orca beach-rushing site in October–November) and Punta Cantor. Punta Tombo, just south of the peninsula, holds one million Magellanic penguins from September to February — the world's largest colony.
