What to Expect on the Day
Ferry or fly to Orcas Island
Take the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes to Orcas Island (ferry reservation recommended in summer). Flight from Seattle to Eastsound Airport takes 30 minutes.
Check in at the dock
Meet your guide at the Orcas Island departure dock 20–30 minutes early. Smaller group sizes mean a more personal experience.
Into Haro Strait
Speedboats head west into Haro Strait — one of the most productive orca corridors in the world. Pods are often spotted within the first 20 minutes.
Orca encounter
Approach to within 300 yards (the federal minimum). Observe feeding, socializing, or traveling behavior as your naturalist explains individual whale IDs.
Wildlife bonus
On the return, look for harbor seals on rocky outcrops, Dall's porpoise bow-riding alongside the boat, and bald eagles in the island firs.

How to Choose an Ethical Tour
What ethical operators do
- Maintain the 300-yard minimum distance from orca (federal law)
- Observe whales from the side, not ahead of their travel path
- Support operators following the Pacific Whale Watch Association standards
- Reduce speed when within 400 yards of whales
Red flags to avoid
- Approaching orca head-on or blocking their path
- Multiple vessels surrounding a pod simultaneously
- Any sound devices or feeding to attract whales
