What to Expect on the Day
Meet at Balboa Peninsula
Tours depart from Newport Beach's Balboa Peninsula — a narrow strip of land between the Pacific and Newport Harbour. The Balboa Fun Zone and ferry are right next door. Arrive 20 minutes before departure.
Exit the harbour into the Pacific
Boats exit Newport Harbour through the jetty into open Pacific water. Within minutes you're in the whale watching grounds — this is a fast-access departure point.
Finding the whales
In winter, gray whales are often visible from the jetty itself — they migrate remarkably close to shore. In summer, the captain heads offshore toward the submarine canyon where blue whales feed on krill.
Whale encounter
Federal rules require 100 yards from whales. Blue whales are often 60–80 feet long — even at legal distance they fill your field of view. Gray whale mothers with calves are common in March–April.
Dolphin super-pods
Newport Beach is famous for its dolphin aggregations. Common dolphin pods of 500–2,000 animals are a regular occurrence — the boat slows and passengers watch dolphins surf the bow wave.
