What to Expect on the Day
Depart beneath Morro Rock
The tour departs from Morro Bay Harbour with the 581-foot Morro Rock — a dormant volcanic plug and one of California's most dramatic coastal landmarks — looming over the departure point. Sea otters float in the kelp beds at the harbour mouth. Arrive 20 minutes before departure.
Cross the harbour bar
The boat exits through the harbour entrance into the open Pacific. The bar crossing can be the roughest part of the trip — brief swells as the boat clears the breakwater. Once outside, the Central California coastline stretches north and south with its rugged cliffs and kelp forests.
Gray whale encounters (December–April)
Gray whales pass the Morro Bay coastline on their annual migration between Alaska and Baja California. The Central California coast is one of the narrowest points in the migration corridor — whales pass close to shore and are reliably spotted from boats. February and March are peak months for mothers with calves heading north.
Humpback encounters (May–October)
Humpbacks feed on anchovies and krill in the productive upwelling zones off the Central Coast each summer. They are active feeders — lunge feeding, side lunging, and occasionally breaching. The small-boat format means the naturalist can position closer to feeding activity than larger vessels.
Return past Morro Rock
The return into Morro Bay with Morro Rock framing the approach is one of the great small-harbour arrivals on the California coast. Sea otters, harbour seals, and shorebirds accompany the boat back through the estuary. Morro Bay's waterfront restaurants are a short walk from the dock.
